Paul Moyes

As Marc Chagall once noted: "People have reproached me for putting poetry into my pictures...but show me a single great work which does not have it’s portion of poetry." Lyricism pervades in Paul Moyes subject matter and his paintings capture a gentle tenderness, purity and romance.

Paul Moyes spent 30 years painting with light on celluloid in the Film Industry. When asked why he took up painting he replied,“Bare walls and the need to adorn them with unusual and interesting art” Paul couldn’t find the style of work that inspired him and began to paint; this seemed a natural progression from the Film Industry and his work has become so popular that the years pass and his walls are still bare. "I paint for people to get lost in the work for a moment” on closer examination of his paintings you will often find the artist himself.

The Victorian Terrace series came about when Paul first visited Melbourne and couldn’t believe Melbourne artists did not paint the beautiful rows of iconic terraces. Paul felt passionate about these houses the way that Melbournians do and thus began his paint affair with our homes. Paul spent months on one small terrace painting and when he sent the first one to Melbourne he added a note saying ‘ Now I know why artists don’t paint terrace houses, they take so long to finish!’ With that, I didn’t expect to see any more terrace paintings arrive but they did and suddenly there was a waiting list for them, as soon as they land in Melbourne they are snapped up.

The detail in even the smaller paintings is superb and the quirkiness we expect from Paul abounds. There is so much going on, endless stories appear, dogs travel in baskets on bicycles and cats are forever getting stuck in trees, there is just as much action inside the houses as there are in the streets and gardens where daisies litter the sidewalks and the neighborhood is brimming with things to do and people to visit. What a wonderful place it is inside a Paul Moyes painting.
