Sidney Nolan b.1917 d.1992
Sidney Robert Nolan was born in Carlton,Melbourne. Nolan seperated from his wife in 1941,then lived with The Reed family at Heide, he knew Arthur Boyd, Mary Boyd (whom became his third wife in 1978), Joy Hester, John Perceval & Albert Tucker. In 1947 Nolan married Cynthia Hansen(John Reed’s sister). In 1951, Nolan held his first solo exhibition in London, where he based himself & traveled extensively. From the 1970s, Nolan visited Australia regularly. He was knighted for his services to art in 1981 & awarded the Order of Merit in 1983. He married Elizabeth Patterson in 1938.
Education - Prahran Technical College & the following year was employed as a commercial artist. He attended the National Gallery of Victoria Art School briefly in 1934 and again in 1936.
