Joanna Wolthuizen b.1982
Joanna’s work is a reflection of a complete adoration and love for painting and creating.
Joanna channels her emotional responses and energy into her work and innately structures this in graphical compositions. She enjoys combining a rawness of application with an ordered composition; often resulting in bold semi-abstract and high impact works.
The artist aims to capture the essence of a subject which stirs her; whether that subject be a landscape, interior or emotion, the subject is always varied. She translates the impression/vibe/essence of that subject into a simplified, stripped back yet interesting representation, where line, colour and composition are key.
Elements are rearranged and details interlock; creating semi abstract representations which are bold and graphical. The fundamentals of design, line, colour and placement, dictate the image, and, arrangement of these components is imperative in Joanna’s art practice.
Text is a common element throughout Joanna’s art practice, which she uses to link and convey an introduction of the subject, to the viewer. Often drawn from reverie and influenced by music and poetry, Joanna uses text as a means of a visual language; not only a written language, as she is extremely attracted to the forms of letters and print, literature and poetry. Text in Joanna’s work presents clues into the meaning and inspiration behind the work, yet also highlights and compliments the design of the composition. She is attracted to the scratchy, raw and loose scribbling of words and letters which loosen the work and contrast to the tight graphical elements.
