Fred Fowler

Fred Fowler [NUROC] has long and esteemed history in Melbourne’s graffiti culture starting at the age of eleven and progressing to spray paint & piecing at the age of sixteen. Since then, Fred has retired from illegal graffiti and is focusing on a career in fine art.

Exposure to his fathers’ extensive collection of art from Papua New Guinea as a child has led to a lifelong interest in indigenous art from around the world, particularly forms involving pattern making and optical effects. These influences have had a significant impact on Fred’s own art, leading him to explore complex line structure, symbolism, and 20th century iconography and logos. Artistically adventurous and prolific, Freds’ style is impossible to pigeonhole, as he constantly seeks new inspirations and influences to draw into his art. A master of many techniques, Fred’s graffiti pieces rarely look the same twice, and he has never restricted his work to any-one signature style, making him a rather unique figure in graffiti culture. In 2000 at the age of 21 Fred launched his fine art career with his first solo exhibition "Raiders of the Lost Art" featuring rock carvings, stencils and paintings.

Exhibitions

Since that time Fred has exhibited widely and his work has been shown at the National Gallery of Australia, Ballarat Fine Art Gallery, No Comply at Federation Square and Bootlegger at Until Never, as well as major street based installations at the Big Day Out and Outside the Square at World Square (Sydney).
