Eve Marks
Composed, serene, confident, self possessed, indifferent, curious, and the "interplay.
I am very passionate about my new work of the girls, they resonate strongly with me. I like the ambiguity of the paintings; it is not clear whether these girls are the same girl or separate, the expression on the faces are the same yet not the same, each girl has her own personality or is it the same girl changing personality over time. The closer and more you look at them, the more you will see in their faces. I think they are engaging and enigmatic.
I was working as a graphic artist for 15 years until in 2001, I felt the need to pick up a brush and see where my lifelong dream would take me. The pursuit of an unrealized obsession to paint began. Self taught with a few inspirational workshops thrown in, I began painting full time and i was determined.
After 2 years of painting and selling my work proficiently in Byron, I moved back to Melbourne and the thought of showing in Melbourne was an exciting and challenging prospect.
Upon returning to Melbourne and re-experiencing it’s moody skies, I felt a need to lighten up my style. I started to pay more attention to social personas. I began to paint the multiple girls; seemingly the same girl echoed subtly in different stages of being. The girls can be viewed as social clones or facets of the same person. The more you look at her/them the more you see in the faces, attitudes such as calmness, indifference, curiosity and always an interplay. That’s what fuels my fascination with them and hopefully captures the imagination of viewers when they look at them.
Recently I started to paint the single, independent woman, with what started out as the French attitude; Savoir fare, au-revoire, reverie. I enjoy the care-freeness and self confidence that these women emanate and represent. I love to create and play with the atmosphere of these pieces.
At the same time I have always experimented and played with abstract expressionism; a genre that I very much admire. Its a purely selfish and natural process for me; it feeds my fascination and love for color, tone, form and texture. It is instinctive painting that comes from within, and seemingly paints itself. There is a particular magic to abstract painting for me, that also lends its results to my figurative work.
Thank you to anyone who has invested in my work and enabled me to pursue my dream. I love to paint, I can only hope that the people who see my work enjoy them as much as I enjoy painting them.
